I don’t give every book I read a rating. There are some genres of books that I never give a rating. I may or may not review them, but I don’t feel right rating them. Today I want to talk about those.
- Classics and acclaimed literary fiction: So, here’s the thing. I read for pleasure. I am not exactly an expert on literature. In fact, I am an engineering student, and despite my passion for books, my knowledge of the nuances of literature is no more than what I learned in high school. So, I personally do not feel comfortable challenging the opinions of people who are way more knowledgeable than me in this field. I am not by any means saying you shouldn’t review those books as well.
- Middle grade/children’s books: There are many books which I enjoyed as a kid, which I don’t think I would enjoy now. So, I’m not sure I’d be fairly able to judge if the targeted audience would enjoy this book.
- Memoirs/autobiographies: I feel like these may not be the most enjoyable of books at times. However, these are not usually written for enjoyment. They are written because the writer has something to share from their lives.
So, that’s it. Do you agree with my reasons? Either way, I am open to debate, so don’t hesitate to share your opinions in the comments.

I can definitely relate to your dilemma… But I think you should go with your gut no matter what and review the books you want to review, in any way you want. You’re doing it as a hobby, not as a job, so don’t put so much pressure on yourself. It will definitely spoil your enjoyment! Great post 🙂

I totally understand you. In past, I also had troubles with rating classics. Because… How can I give 2 or 3 stars to a book which is classics? But now I just don’t care anymore. It’s my personal opinion and we can’t love same books 🙂
