Top Ten Movies I watched in 2021.

So, I watched quite a few good movies in 2021. Here are the 10 movies I watched this year(not necessarily 2021 releases) that I liked the most, in no particular order.

1. Marie Antoinette

This movie, by Sofia Coppola, was a snarky, fun take on the life of Marie Antoinette. With a cool soundtrack and costume choices, this was so much fun to watch.

2. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

I had got into Ghibli movies last year and I had been continuing to watch them. This movie, directed by Isaho Takahata was such an emotional watch.

3. Dogtooth

Yorgos Lanthimos is known to make weird-ass films and this is no exception. This follows a family where the parents have created an elaborate set up confining their son and daughter, to the house, not even giving them names (or telling them about the concept of names), making up false word meanings etc. A really weird but compelling watch.

4. The Disciple

Directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, this movie follows an Indian classical musician looking back on his life and the sacrifices he made for his art. A beautiful, slow yet intense watch.

5. Palm Springs

Directed by Max Barbakow, this was a strange, story following two wedding guests stuck together in a time loop. A stylish, strangely funny and poignant watch.

6. Silenced

A dark, rather depressing Korean movie about a teacher who exposes the faculty in a school for deaf children, who sexually assaulted some of the children. A harrowing watch that is all the more depressing when you learn it’s based on true events.

7. Midsommar

I was a little late to this, but i thought this Ari Aster movie was great in its horrifying-ness. Following a group of young people staying with a cult as they celebrate the Midsommar festival, i thought it was an amazing horror watch.

8. Minnal Murali

I included this movie here for the sheer enjoyment it gave me. A Malayalam movie about a tailor in a village in Kerala who gets superpowers after he is struck by lightening. It was a really fun watch.

9. Phantom Thread

This movie, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is set in the backdrop of high fashion and follows the complicated relationship between a famous designer and his muse. A dark, complicated story.

10. Farewell Amor

Directed by Ekwi Msangi, this was a heartwarming story, following an Angolan refugee family reunited after 15 years of seperation. It dealt with some poignant themes in a really heartfelt, touchig way
