Crudo by Olivia Laing

Crudo by Olivia Laing was a book I picked up recently, and finished in one sitting. It follows the stream of thoughts of a forty-year-old writer, who is about to get married. as she thinks about the state of the world-rising fascism, global warming, and many other things. The main character ‘Kathy’ is supposed to be a reference to American novelist Kathy Acker, though I did not realize it till I looked this novel up.

I am normally not a big fan of stream-of-consciousness meditation-on-the-world type novels, without a real plot. I tend to wonder what the point was, why not just write an essay instead. However this one I really enjoyed. I thought it was a really sharp, clever novel, though I did not really get all the references in it. The musings about current political issues and the main character’s anxiety over it were all too relatable. Definitely would recommend this one.
